Breaking the Chains of Child Labour Requires United Action: Says Labour Secretary

Keraniganj CorrespondentA:H.M. Safiquzzaman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has emphasized that eliminating child labour requires joint efforts from families, communities, and all relevant stakeholders — not government action alone.

He made these remarks on Thursday (June 19) while speaking as the chief guest at a program organized at Jhauchar Balur Math in Hazaribagh, Dhaka, marking the World Day Against Child Labour. This year’s theme was “Let’s Soar on the Wings of Dreams, Break the Chains of Child Labour.”

“Sending children to school is not enough,” the secretary said. “We must ensure their creative development and guarantee a safe, nurturing childhood. Only a united approach involving families, society, and the state can bring lasting change.”

The event was jointly organized by Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) and Educo Bangladesh. Notably, both organizations have been actively working for years to bring school dropouts back into education. Through self-funded initiatives, they have provided educational support and promoted school enrollment among underprivileged children.

The event featured an art competition, prize-giving ceremony, and an awareness discussion. Shawkat Ali, Deputy Director of Local Government, presided over the session. Special guests included Dr. Muhammad Shahid Uz Zaman, Executive Director of ESDO; Afzal Kabir Khan, Manager of Educo’s Child Labour Elimination Program; and Abdur Rahim, Program Director of Educo Bangladesh. Teachers, parents, and respected community members also participated.
